At the very beginning of the 1990s, American photographer Remsen Wolff spent a month at the American Hotel in Amsterdam to work on his project Special Girls – A Celebration. His focus was on transgender people from New York and Amsterdam, both performers and those struggling with their gender identity. The portraits are as exuberant and glamorous as they are subdued and vulnerable.
